Building SafeSkills for HSRs

Building SafeSkills for HSRs

Effective communication was a hot topic at the recent SafeSkills HSR Conference – a travelling roadshow for over 440 HSRs (Health and Safety Representatives) across the motu.

Presented by Safeguard, the one-day event is now in its sixth year and is designed to help New Zealand’s HSR professionals build the skills they need to keep our workplaces safe. This year’s conference was chock-full of dynamic workshops and discussion-based sessions on everything from the latest health and safety research and legislation through to the importance of managing mental health and wellbeing.

Education Unlimited founder Tina Rose and senior learning specialist Martin Tanner were in the thick of the action, delivering 2.5 hour Effective Communication Skills workshops that taught attendees how to unlock their communication potential.

“As an HSR, your role is to advocate for your fellow workers – you are the channel by which their voice is heard up, across and down your organisation,” explains Tina.

The interactive sessions explored effective listening and questioning, having difficult conversations with managers, and building awareness of different communication styles, and equipped attendees with powerful strategies and tools to carry out their duties more effectively.

Delivered in Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch, the Education Unlimited workshops earned a groundswell of positive feedback. Here are just a few of the comments from those who attended:
